Amidst hanging objects, video installations, sculpture, photography and paintings, Iron Women addresses issues faced by female artists behind the Iron Curtain that are still relevant today. The site-specific performance, in conjunction with the exhibit The Medea Insurrection: Radical Women Artists Behind the Iron Curtain at the Wende Museum, looks at the marginalization of female artists and their exclusion in the annals of art history. Exploring the work and aesthetics of these women artists, with themes ranging from the perception and representation of the body, autonomy, loneliness and being ignored, Iron Women wrestles with and shows how they resonant today. The soundtrack features women composers and musicians from Eastern Europe who also worked behind the Iron Curtain.
