OUR GENEROUS SUPPORTERS PAVE THE WAY FOR ONGOING EXPLORATION
Founded in 1985, Donna Sternberg & Dancers (DS&D) is a non-profit dance company whose mission is to discover, transform, and connect. DS&D uses contemporary dance to discover connections between dance, science and humankind.
We establish a bridge between scientific inquiry and its impact on the human experience, unlocking new areas of awareness and plumbing the emotional and psychological aspects of STEM. We work collaboratively with scientists, artists, organizations, and other key stakeholders to enrich the cultural landscape and expand community engagement, guided by the belief that learning is a life-long pursuit.
The company stages its performances in a variety of settings, including site-specific locations such as parks, galleries, libraries, beaches, as well as in conventional theaters.

Ancestors Voices is a dance/theater project that explores the field of epigenetics and generational inherited trauma in the Jewish community. This project will actively include the community through workshops using co-created movement, journaling, and drawing. Material gathered from the workshops will shape the content of a new dance performance.
Intergenerational trauma, as highlighted by studies at Duke University, has profound effects on individuals, impacting their mental, emotional, and even physical well-being. "Ancestor's Voices" embarks on the journey of healing by exploring how generations of exclusion and oppression can shape behavior and self-perception through generational and genetic trauma.
The Jewish community has faced exclusion and anti-Semitism throughout history, making them susceptible to carrying inherited intergenerational trauma. The project targets Jewish populations, especially those of color; Sephardic, Mizrahi, and other marginalized Jewish groups who have borne an additional burden, often being unrecognized and unacknowledged both within and outside of the Jewish community.
Ancestor’s Voices will be coming to the community fall 2023 - fall 2025
Warming is a live site-specific dance performance that celebrates the natural beauty of Tongva Park and, by extension, our precious Earth while addressing the pressing issue of climate change.
This unique event is made possible through a partnership with Sustainable Works, an organization dedicated to fostering healthier and more equitable communities to heal our natural environment through interactive events, educational programs and green business initiatives.
Warming explores the impact of climate change on both the Earth as a whole and Santa Monica specifically, using the diverse elements of Tongva park to amplify the implications.
Our choreography will be crafted to harmonize with the park's surroundings, drawing inspiration from scientific data. As the audience follows the dancers to various locations within the park, they will witness captivating, short dance sequences that bring these environmental insights to life.
Following the performance, there will be a thought-provoking discussion with information about best practices to support environmental stewardship.
Coming Spring 2024
A site-specific performance in collaboration with digital media artist Michael Masucci that examines the effects of the metaverse.
Part horror story, part cautionary tale, this project will shed light on the consequences and dangers of our rapid immersion into altered realities including the emergence of artificial intelligence.
In this innovative production, live dancers will interact with a holographic dancer, brought to life in real time and projected using advanced technology from the University of Nebraska Medical School.
Coming Fall 2024
Awe & Wonder is a DS&D signature performance, conceptualized and produced by Artistic Director, Donna Sternberg, exploring the intersection between science and dance by connecting scientists with choreographers.
Four choreographers create new dances inspired by their conversations with four scientists. One scientist is paired with one choreographer, dialoguing about the scientist’s field of study, which then becomes the starting point for the choreographer to create a piece.
The theme has yet to be announced.
Coming Fall/Winter 2024
